She gripped my hand as we held down the street.  I asked her softly, "however did we meet?"  She listened to me as my stories unfold, and became the warmth between me and the cold.  And then she told me, "there's no way."  She told me calmly, "there's no way."

The coffee pot sang to us for a while.  She didn't rush.  It never was her style.  "Don't ask me these questions," she said with her eyes.  "Because I've said nothing, you can't say I've lied."  But then she had told me, "there's no way."  She'd told me calmly, "there's no way."

We didn't break for the telephone.  Don't care for the sounds of anyone... but now she is gone, and that was so long ago.  So I guess what I've learned, she always knew.  Because she had told me, "there's no way."  She'd told me calmly, "there's no way."
